Before Preity Zinta starts celebrating as her team Kings XI Punjab’s first win in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) match, she needs to appear in court on April 2, 2010. Preity Zinta, who is co-owner of the team and Ness Wadia, Vice President of the Kings XI Punjab, have received the summon from the court as they have used freedom fighters name, mainly Chandarshekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru in an advertisement to promote their team.
City based NGO, Global Human Rights Council (GHRC) filed the petition, while Anshul Berry, civil judge (senior division) has issued summons. According to Arvind Thakur, one of three complainants, the names were to allegedly garner publicity, which is a violation of The Emblem and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950. The act prohibits improper use of names or ideals that inspired the freedom struggle.
Arvind Thakur, president of GHRC, stated that summon would be handed over on Tuesday (23 March 2010) or during the match on Wednesday (24 March 2010), but since they travel with the team, so they can’t meet up with them. Now, he will personally hand over the summons to Preity Zinta and others at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium.
