We are Family Movie Review

Just returned from the movie, Yeah, I know it’s Thursday and bit early to write review of any movie but I can’t help it, this wasn’t a preview show, the movie released today. Yeah, I also know that not many people know about it, atleast not in the theater I had gone to, I was expecting around 70-75% of the seats full but sadly, only around 25% of the people turned up, kind of shocking for a Karan Johar movie. But let’s not talk about that, let’s talk about the movie.

So, as everyone knows, the movie is adaptation of the Hollywood movie Stepmom. I won’t say it’s replica of Stepmom but yes, like the movie makers say, it is definitely based on that.

The movie is about divorced couple, Maya (Kajol) and Aman (Arjun Rampal). Maya loves her kids more than anything, Aman too loves the kids but he is also in love with Shreya (Kareena Kapoor). Aman’s every attempt to make Shreya gel with his family goes in vain. Due to one or other mistake she ends up making kids or Maya angry. But suddenly, the story takes a u-turn which makes Maya and Shreya live together and share the responsibilities. Now, this will be easily predictable for the ones who have already watched Stepmom and for others, do watch it and find out 🙂

The movie was basically good, it was like any other Karan Johar movies. Generally the recipe of  any karan Johar movie is, a foreign location, with a very beautiful place, great house, enough cash with everyone, a harry potter like kid, a cute girl, Shahrukh Khan or equivalent.. basically someone who can cry very well and make you cry too (specially our moms and sisters), lot of emotion and drama packed with good music. And this movie has everything which I mentioned above. Full Karan Johar masala movie.

No, I don’t mean to say, it was bad, but what I am trying to say is, even though everything was very well setup and written but at some point, you feel like “We have already seen this in every Karan Johar movie” I felt exactly the same way. Even though the movie was directed by debutant Sidharth Malhotra, it had Karan Johar touches at each and every place. They really managed to extract good talent from every actor. Really loved the character of Arjun Rampal, remember his old days? Everyone used to call him a wooden piece with no expressions? And after Om Shanti Om, he squashed everyone and jumped right ahead in the race. In each and every movie, I  have been seeing Arjun Rampal growing and reaching a new level.

Kajol the perfect choice for the role of a mother, she was excellent. She really knows how to handle the emotional scenes and she does that very well. Many people say that, Kajol’s role in every movie is almost say, she has one job to do and that’s all she does. But I am okay with that, I still love her, love to see her making my mom and sister cry.

Kareena on the other hand was perfect. Frankly speaking, when I saw the trailer of this movie, I felt, pairing Arjun and Kareena was a big mistake as they would never be able to gel as a couple but I was totally wrong, they looked perfect and she handled her role superbly. Kids were perfect too, really liked the youngest girl, Anjali played by Diya Sonecha.

Everything was perfect in terms of direction and the story but I felt, they messed up big time towards the end. They ended up being funny instead of serious. I do not want to divulge more details here but you will realize what I am saying, if you watch the movie.  The music was good too but I really don’t know they decided to touch the classic Jailhouse Rock by Elvis and mess it up..

So, overall, the movie was good, it was not bad but nothing great. Everything was like any other Karan Johar movie, just new characters. I would rate this movie

Rating: ★★★☆☆

. Take your mom and sister for this movie, it’s a clean family movie.
