FacebookAfter a gap of four years, Mahesh Manjrekar, director of Vaastav, has return back to directorship flick, ‘City of Gold’ . Recently he unveiled the first look of the film in the presence of his entire cast, including Satish Kaushik, Seema Biswas, Sachin Khedekar, Kashmira Shah, debutant Karan Patel, Siddharth Jadhav, Ankush Chaudhary, Sameer Dharmadhikari, Vineet Kumar Singh, Veena Jhamkar, Shashank Shende and Anusha Dandekar.
The film is based on Marathi play, called ‘Adhantar’, written in 1990s. Dar Motion Picture has produced the film and it has been shot simultaneously in Hindi and Marathi, with the Hindi version titled ‘City of Gold’.
‘City of Gold’ is a realistic film which will showcase the suffering of mill workers, who were an integral part of Mumbai in 1980s. The film is the story of mill workers narrated through the story of one such family. The film traces the birth of the politics of greed in Mumbai and exposes the unholy collusion between the trilogy of big business, the political establishment and the trade union leaders who apparently were charged with protecting the rights of the mill workers.
The film showcases what changes have been happened in the last two decade, the entire landscape of Central Mumbai was changed forever. The land became the currency for growth for some people and this began the extinction of mills in Mumbai; and even it became the cause for thousands of workers who lost their livelihoods as they working in those mills from generation to generation.
Many workers left Mumbai and went back to their congenital homes, some of them struggled and stayed back to fight with situation, but very soon they realized, they will lose this battle very soon; some took very extreme steps by ending their miserable lives, while some took shelter of crime-world.
The film shows the darker side of the story and does not provide any specific solution, but raises many questions in front of us…
