People didn’t know what sperm meant: Shoojit Sircar

Though his last film “Johnny Mastana” with Big B is yet to see the light of the day, director Shoojit Sircar is upbeat and hopeful about his upcoming venture. The film, which deals with the sensitive subject of sperm donation, has a humourous take on the subject.

The writer Juhi Chaturvedi, who is incidentally from Bangalore, came up with the idea and we were excited about it since day one.

says Shoojit, adding,

It’s an unconventional subject that talks about a young Punjabi boy, who becomes a sperm donor and has doctors running behind him. It also has a romantic angle to it.

Talking about the challenges that he faced while making the film, the director says,

There were no challenges except for the fact that people in small villages and interiors of north didn’t know what sperm meant.

With this film, actor John Abraham also begins his innings as a producer.

I got in touch with John through a common friend. He had just launched his production company and was looking for a good script to start with. When he read the script of ” Vicky Donor”, he readily agreed.

says Shoojit. He also says that having John’s name associated with the film will help them in marketing their product.

He adds,

For any film, all kinds of marketing gimmicks are required till the film is released and a big name helps to get the masses to the theatre. Once the film releases, the content will speaks for itself.

Shoojit returned to direction after a gap of five years. His last film being “Yahaan”.

Filmmaking is my passion. We get exhausted after one film and I don’t depend on filmmaking for my bread and butter.

says Shoojit.

He just has already cast Ayushmann Khanna, the lead actor of “Vicky Donor”, for his next film.
