I am not very confident ‘Bhanwari Devi’: Mahie Gill

She took a bold step in her career with Saheb, Biwi aur Gangster, but actor Mahie Gill confesses that cutting edge roles still elude her. The actor, who made her debut with Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D reveals that she doesn’t get roles from filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj and Dibakar Banerjee. “I am not offered roles in their films,” she rues, adding, “I want to explore other genres, especially comedy and romcoms.”

Despite the lack of roles from good quarters coming her way, the buzz is that Mahie is not keen to do a film based on the life of Bhanwari Devi, a midwife from Jodhpur, who went missing after allegedly blackmailing local politicians for inappropriate sexual conduct. Bhanwari was found dead three days later and the case of her abduction and murder is still in court. Reports suggest that producer-director Mahendra Dhariwal wants to make a film on the subject with Mahie in the lead and Naseeruddin Shah as Mahipal Maderna, an accused in the case.

I read the script for a film on Bhanwari Devi, but I am not very confident about it.

says the actor, adding that she is undecided on whether to take up the project, shooting for which is set to begin in March.

At the moment, it is her onscreen chemistry with Irrfan Khan in her upcoming release that is creating more buzz. According to reports, Irrfan was nervous about doing intimate scenes with Mahie.

The scene required a bit of intimacy, as his character was meeting his wife after a long time. But it is a very aesthetically done shot.
