Death Threats to Javed Akhtar

Script-writer and well-known lyricist, Javed Akhtar claimed that he has been threatened by e-mails and telephone calls for raising issues concerned to the Muslim Community. Few days back, Javed Akhtar has expressed his views on Fatwa, and he strongly opposed Fatwa tradition in Muslim community.

Though he declined to elaborate the issue, but he confirmed the news by saying,

“Yes, that is true and I am filing a complaint with the Mumbai police.”

As per sources, Akhtar has been threatened by unknown persons sympathetic to the Darul-Uloom Deoband, an apex body of the Deobandi sect of the Sunni Muslims. Few days back, the sect has issued Fatwas (edicts) prohibiting Muslim women from working together in offices. Many of celebrities have expressed their views on these edicts; Javed was also one of them.

A Muslim scholar, Mohammed F. Ghosi, said that the edicts must be viewed with proper reference to the context in which they were issued. Ghosi also urged Akhtar to first enquire the factual position with the religious heads before criticizing them.
