Amrita Rao gets an award from the Konkani Community

This weekend some eminent Konkanis from around the world gathered in the US for a three-day programme — the Konkani Sammelan — where some of the most prominent names from the community were honoured. Amrita Rao and filmmaker Shyam Benegal from B-Town, were among those in attendance.

Amrita, who was honoured for her contribution to cinema, spoke to us just before the felicitation. She said,

It’s a community honour and I feel very humbled with this recognition. I hope I’m able to speak in fluent Konkani at the event as most of the elders of the community think that the younger generation cannot manage to speak even one complete sentence in our mother tongue without using English words!

Benegal, who was invited as the keynote speaker, said,

Kalpana Lajmi, Amrita and her sister, and I are among those from the film fraternity who will be present at this Konkani congregation. I am especially happy for Amrita and her sister. Amrita’s a very talented actor, and I have witnessed her growth, especially with her performance in my film Welcome To Sajjanpur.

Talking about his keynote speech, he said,

I think it’s interesting to look at the trajectory of the community, which is among one of the micro communities of India. And the Konkanis invited to the sammelan stand in testimony to that. Events like these are not chauvinistic gatherings, but occasions to appreciate each other’s works and achievements.
